The Long Loneliness by Dorothy Day

The Long Loneliness

In her autobiography, The Long Loneliness, Dorothy Day chronicles her life as a young idealist living a bohemian lifestyle and subsequent conversion to Catholicism and the co-founding of the Catholic Worker Movement.

What strikes me most after having read this book is Dorothy’s strong conviction to help her fellow man and how she pursues this endeavor throughout her life. It is a strong testament for those of us living in a modern day culture that at times seems superficial and self-absorbed.

This book provides intimate insights into Dorothy’s life, as well as a glimpse into the politics and struggles of early 20th century America. A must read for anyone wishing to better understand a towering figure in the social justice movement.
